The M25 has a reputation. Fairly earned. But the drive from Hawkhurst to Heathrow doesn't have to be the stressful part of your journey — not if it's planned properly.
Here's an honest look at what the M25 is like at different times of day, and how we plan every Heathrow pickup around it.
The route from Hawkhurst to Heathrow
The standard route runs approximately 58 miles: out of Hawkhurst on the A21, joining the M25 at junction 5 near Sevenoaks, then west around to the M4 spur and into Heathrow. In clear conditions this takes around 1 hour 20 minutes. In congested conditions it can stretch to 1 hour 50 minutes or more.
When is the M25 worst?
Based on hundreds of runs over the years, here's what we've found:
- Worst: Weekday mornings 07:00–09:30, particularly around the M25/M23 interchange and the approach to the M4 junction
- Unpredictable: Friday afternoons from 14:00 onwards — this can add 40 minutes with no warning
- Usually fine: Before 06:00, after 20:00, and most of the weekend outside bank holiday periods
- Avoid if possible: School half-term Fridays and the first weekend of the summer holidays — these are genuinely the worst days of the year for the M23/M25

How we plan around traffic
Every Heathrow booking gets its pickup time calculated using current traffic data for that specific day and time — not a generic estimate. If our usual route is showing significant delays, we'll use the A25 via Reigate as an alternative approach to the M25, which often bypasses the worst of the junction 5–8 congestion.
We also build in a meaningful buffer — typically 20–25 minutes for Heathrow journeys — so a minor incident on the motorway doesn't threaten your check-in time.
Terminal drop-off at Heathrow
Heathrow has four passenger terminals: T2, T3, T4, and T5. Each has a dedicated drop-off zone. Your driver will take you directly to the correct terminal drop-off point — no unnecessary loops. Always confirm your terminal when you book, as getting it wrong at Heathrow adds significantly more time than at other airports.
Our recommendation for Heathrow bookings
For any Heathrow flight before 10:00, allow at least 1 hour 50 minutes travel time and aim to arrive 3 hours before departure. For later flights, 1 hour 30 minutes travel time plus 2.5 hours before departure gives comfortable headroom.
